Update from Michigan!

Hello everyone! Although I am in Michigan right now, Chad has been able to send me pictures of the new counter top, so now I can update the blog. Joe from the cabinet place delivered the counter top on Friday evening, and he and Chad set it on top of the cabinets. Although it isn't attached yet, it looks wonderful! It was nice that Joe was able to revamp the counter top to fit our changed plans. Hopefully this coming week the rest of the plumbing and electrical work can be finished in the kitchen so it will really be functional. Take a look at the two pictures below.

I'll be back with more updates as they arise!

Weekend Work

This past weekend allowed us to take care of more work at the flip house. We started on Saturday morning by putting the knobs and pulls on the kitchen cabinets. Mom and Dad came up from Sioux Falls to spend the day in town, and they made a pit stop at the house to install the cabinet hardware. Dad drilled the holes and Mom attached the knobs. Chad and I entertained our visitors! Chad's parents and our friends Lee & Jenn stopped by the house to check on our progress. Lee, who used to flip houses himself in Las Vegas, was able to give Chad some good ideas regarding the fixing up of the basement, which will help us a lot! Take a peek at the improvement the hardware adds to the cabinets!

After we spent the afternoon with family at my nephew's birthday party, Chad and I headed back to the house to put in a couple hours getting the second coat of paint on the living room walls. Chad also put a second coat of white paint on the ceiling while I did all the edging around the ceiling. We have a process for painting that works pretty good between the two of us!

Once finished, we set up the fan to blow all night and help dry the walls. As we can't open the windows due to the cold outside, the humidity from the paint can build up pretty fast. It helps to keep the fan blowing during the overnight. We went back to the house Sunday morning to check out the dried product, and it looks super! The color of the paint is growing on me now that the second coat is on the walls. The pictures show the color as I would like it to be...but when actually looking at the walls, the paint is a tick darker than in the pictures. Oh well...I am certain it will be great once we get the dark stain on the wood floors.

Chad also starting tearing up the rest of the old floor in the bathroom while I did a couple spots of touching up with the paint in the living room and kitchen. I also cleaned off the dusty fridge and vacuumed the kitchen and cabinets. We then did a little light cleaning and organizing around the house before we went home to watch some playoff football.

Our next steps will be waiting for our new counter top to be finished, and then we can get that installed, along with our sink and faucet. We also purchased light fixtures this weekend for the kitchen, hallway, and bathroom. We will wait to install those until we are finished with the work in those areas. We will also install the rest of the appliances and paint the trim that will go around the windows and floor in the kitchen. I need to paint the insides of our exterior doors and eventually Dad will get the screen doors installed as well. As much as we are going in and out with large equipment, it is just easier right now to only have one door to go through as opposed to two. We will also be moving along into the bathroom and the bedrooms to get those spaces completed. Keep checking back for more updates as further progress is made!

Kitchen Switcheroo

Today was a good day at the flip house! Chad and Dad were both at work today switching around the cabinets in the kitchen. The new layout is MUCH more user friendly and still looks great! They did remove the main piece of countertop that they installed last weekend. Chad brought this to our cabinet guy, and he will have Formatop revamp it so we will have all one piece with only one seam to cover all the cabinets with the new layout. They also got the new microwave mounted to the wall, and the stove and dishwasher will follow as soon as we have the counter top back and the plumber and electrician can return to finish up. Dad also installed the toe kick underneath the lower cabinets. In the pictures below, you can see the old piece of countertop that we won't be using anymore, but for now, it serves as a nice place to set stuff! :) Also, don't mind the dusty refrigerator...it has been existing in a work zone and has not had a soapy rag taken to it yet!

Tomorrow morning Chad and I are going to attempt to finish the second coat of paint on the living room wall (we have been procrastinating which is not good), and Dad will be putting the knobs and pulls on the cabinet doors and drawers. I will take more pictures (of course!) and post them this weekend. Thanks everyone!

Kitchen Cabinets

Saturday morning started out to be one of the most exciting days since the start of the flip house. The kitchen was going to come together! Chad arrived at the flip house bright and early to meet the cabinet guy who was delivering our cabinets and countertop. I showed up a little after and we started taking cabinets out of their boxes. They looked awesome!

Mom and Dad arrived a short time later to get started installing the cabinets. To work we go!

Mom looking lovely...:)

The observers...:)

After the morning had gotten going, Kyle arrived to help before going to work that evening. His help was very valuable and much appreciated!

The cabinets look absolutely great! Mom and I left the guys early afternoon so we could attend a baby shower, and all was going well. A little later, though, we discovered that there had been some issues. It's amazing how a wall can look completely straight across until you put something up next to it that is perfectly straight. Yikes! After all the lower cabinets had been installed, Dad had to shave the countertop down quite a bit to get it to rest evenly against the kitchen wall. Once that was taken care of, the countertop was on and looked great. However, another glitch was coming...

Once they moved the refrigerator into the kitchen, we discovered that it was much too deep to fit comfortably in the spot we had designated for it. Uh oh. The small cabinets and the countertop next to the fridge were virtually inaccessible with the current set up. The fridge was just much too deep. What a big lesson for us to learn - remember to account for the depth of your fridge! Chad and I have a counter-depth fridge (only the doors extend past the countertop) in our kitchen, and so we quickly forgot how standard fridges are deeper than ours.

Lucky for us, we have a relatively easy fix that will make the kitchen work and not cost us too much more money. We are going to switch around a couple cabinets and put the fridge next to the stove. It isn't our most ideal set up, but it is going to work much better than the way it currently sits. For the countertop, we will uninstall the large piece (which is really two pieces fastened together), bring it back to the manufacturer, and he will detach the two pieces at the seam, make a bigger piece to extend over the new cabinet arrangement, and attach it back on to the large piece of countertop. We will then put it back on the cabinets and hopefully have a workable kitchen. I think it will work out just fine!

Dad will be back to town Friday, weather permitting, so we will hopefully be able to see this change take affect. Thank you again to everyone who has been checking in on the blog and sending us their best wishes for our success. We appreciate it greatly! :)

Kitchen Floor

The kitchen floor is in, and it looks good! Take a look at the pics below:

Tomorrow will be a big day with the cabinets and countertops coming! The plumber and electrician will be coming next week to finish up their jobs in the kitchen, so we will not be able to get the dishwasher, stove, and fridge put into place just yet. But what a change it will be to have cabinets. Stay tuned tomorrow for some exciting updates!
